The only session at Huddersfield Golf Club that the England seniors lost was the first morning’s foursomes against reigning champions, Ireland, and even then Russell and her partner, current Seniors’ champion Catherine Rawthorne, provided England’s only point with a 2&1 victory.
From then on it was plain sailing for team England who took the afternoon singles 4 ½ to ½ before cruising to comfortable victory against Scotland, where Russell triumphed 5&3 in the singles having sat out the morning’s foursomes that saw England whitewash their opponents from north of the border.
Two more wins on the final day by the Ashdown member helped her team batter Wales by seven points to one and take the Sue Johnson trophy to make it a richly deserved double having won the European Seniors championship earlier in the year. So a very big well done to Katherine and her England team mates!
And whilst Russell was doing the business for her team in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Royal Ashdown captain, John Eakin, was enjoying a personal success on the exclusive and oak lined fairways of the Barlassina Country Club of Lombardy in north western Italy.
Playing in the fourth ISPS Handa Italian Open, Eakin won his division with a gross score of 177 after two rounds of the par 72, Marco Croze designed course, to take the title by three strokes. As they say in Lombardy, ‘Fantastico!’
