WHAT TRIUMPHS Ashdown Ladies have enjoyed this year. The latest success came in the Sussex County Morrice Foursomes in conditions reminiscent of the storm scene from ‘King Lear’ with a howling gale and rain lashing almost at right angles at Littlehampton Golf Club.
The Ashdown pairings of Hockey and Thompson, Todd and Russell and Marlio and Bowers had beaten Cottesmore in the morning’s semi-finals and met the Golf at Goodwood ladies in the afternoon by which time the conditions had deteriorated sufficiently for the third and fourth place play-off to be declared a halved match. One of the Ashdown ladies even managed to set the clubhouse fire alarm off when attempting to dry a sodden golf glove with a hairdryer.
Undeterred the gallant finalists jettisoned their umbrellas which were being blown inside out with the Ashdown ladies triumphing by two matches to one, helped by Katherine Russell holing a six iron on the 15th for an eagle, in a match that was decided on the 18th green.
Having dried out, pictured above are the successful Ashdown team with Ladies’ captain, Poo Adam with the trophy, together with Jan Hobden and Sue Wheeler (seated front) who formed part of the ladies’ retinue of doughty and very wet caddies. Not in the photograph are Catherine Scrivens and Eve Spear who played in earlier rounds helping the team get through to the final.
As well as being part of the successful Ashdown side, Katherine Russell and her Sussex County team mates, captained by Sue Todd, were narrowly pipped to finish runners-up to Nottinghamshire in the English County Finals held at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire.
